Michigan law provides that child support orders can be modified upon a showing of proper cause or as the circumstances of the parents and benefit of the children require. As you can see, the burdens of proof involved in modifying child support are relatively low when compared to the burdens involved when seeking a modification of parenting time or custody. While there may be no bar to seeking a modification of child support, that does not mean that there is no minimum threshold to meet.

The current Michigan Child Support Formula provides that “the minimum threshold for modification is 10-percent of the currently ordered support payment or $50 per month, whichever is greater.” MCSF 4.04(A) As a result of the relatively low burdens involved in modifying child support, many people underestimate the procedures involved and the potential arguments to be made.
