3 Dead 2 Injured in I-96 Crash, Livingston County
A devastating crash on Interstate 96 in Howell claimed the lives of three individuals and left two others critically injured on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office.
Details of the Fatal Crash
The collision occurred around 3:30 p.m. on eastbound I-96, just east of Highland Road (M-59) in Howell Township. Authorities report that a 54-year-old man from Sterling Heights was behind the wheel of a 2010 BMW 528i, traveling westbound when his vehicle veered off the road, crossed the grassy median, and entered oncoming traffic.
The BMW then crashed head-on into a 2006 Mercury Mountaineer, resulting in a catastrophic impact that led to multiple fatalities and serious injuries.
Lives Lost and Critical Injuries
Tragically, the Sterling Heights driver succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital. The driver of the Mountaineer, a 68-year-old man from Fowlerville, also lost his life at the scene. A 91-year-old Howell woman, a passenger in the Mountaineer, was another victim of the deadly crash.
Two additional passengers in the Mountaineer, a 69-year-old woman and a 37-year-old woman, both from Fowlerville, suffered critical injuries and were rushed to the University of Michigan Health Hospital for emergency treatment. Their current condition remains unknown.
Authorities have not yet determined whether alcohol, speed, or failure to use seatbelts played a role in the accident, as the investigation remains ongoing. The freeway was closed for four hours as law enforcement conducted their investigation and cleared debris from the scene.
Compensation for Victims and Their Families
In the aftermath of such a devastating crash, the victims and their families may be entitled to compensation for their losses. This can include:
- Medical expenses for the injured victims
- Lost wages due to incapacitation
- Pain and suffering for both the survivors and the families of those who lost their lives
- Wrongful death benefits, including funeral and burial costs
- Loss of companionship for family members left behind
These forms of compensation can ease the financial burden placed on victims and their loved ones as they attempt to recover physically, emotionally, and financially.
