Car Goes Airborne on M-53, Crashes into Macomb County Yards
A recent crash involving a vehicle going airborne on M-53 has left Macomb County homeowners deeply concerned about their safety. The incident occurred on Saturday, December 14, when a 17-year-old driver lost control of their speeding car, which veered off the highway and caused significant property damage to four backyards in Washington Township.
The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the driver’s excessive speed led to the car leaving the road and barreling through private properties. Residents, including Lyndsey Carpenter, voiced their fears about the danger such accidents pose, particularly for children playing in their backyards. “My fear is someone is going to end up getting killed before something is done about this,” Carpenter said.
Residents Demand Action for Safety
Homeowners have been calling for preventive measures to ensure such accidents don’t happen again. Carpenter, along with her neighbors, contacted the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) to request the construction of a barrier or wall along the highway. However, MDOT denied the request, citing that the area did not meet the criteria for such infrastructure.
MDOT’s statement explained their reasoning: roads are designed with a 34-foot “clear zone” that allows drivers to recover if they lose control, provided they are driving at an appropriate speed. While the agency acknowledged the residents’ concerns, it emphasized that road designs cannot account for every instance of human error, such as speeding.
Despite MDOT’s explanation, homeowners remain frustrated by the lack of immediate solutions. Carpenter shared her disappointment, saying, “Just to get blown off that quickly, it was very disappointing.” A traffic study is currently underway to evaluate the situation, but its results may take time.
Local township officials have also been brought into the conversation. After visiting the crash site, they agreed that measures should be taken to address the issue, though specific solutions have yet to be proposed.
Compensation for Victims of Property Damage
For homeowners affected by this crash, the cost of property repairs can be substantial. Damaged trees, fences, and landscaping must be restored, not to mention the emotional toll of feeling unsafe in one’s own home. Victims of such accidents may be entitled to compensation for property damage, emotional distress, and, in some cases, lost property value.
In such situations, pursuing a claim can be complex, especially when multiple parties, such as drivers, insurance companies, and local authorities, are involved. This is where legal experts like Mihelich & Kavanaugh, PLC step in.
