Fatal Two-Vehicle Collision Claims One Life in St. Clair County

A fatal two-vehicle collision claims one life following a tragic crash that occurred on Wednesday afternoon in St. Clair County, leaving one man dead and a community grieving. The incident took place around 4 p.m. on April 9 at the intersection of Shea and Starville roads in Cottrellville Township, according to the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were dispatched to the scene after receiving emergency calls reporting a vehicle rollover, with a person trapped inside. Upon arrival, first responders discovered that 52-year-old Joseph Richard Quesnell of Clay Township had been fatally injured in the crash. Authorities say Quesnell was driving a 2024 Ford Ranger southbound on Starville Road when he stopped at the intersection before proceeding through it.

Surveillance footage reviewed by the Sheriff’s Office indicates that as Quesnell entered the intersection, his Ford Ranger was struck on the side by a westbound 2019 Ram pickup truck. The force of the collision caused Quesnell’s vehicle to overturn, leading to fatal injuries. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Ram pickup, a 25-year-old man also from Clay Township, remained at the scene and is cooperating fully with investigators. At this stage in the investigation, authorities have stated that alcohol, drugs, and excessive speed do not appear to have contributed to the crash. However, the investigation remains ongoing as officials continue gathering evidence and speaking with witnesses.

When deadly collisions like this occur, families are often left not only with emotional pain but also financial burdens. In fatal crashes, surviving family members may be eligible to pursue compensation for a variety of losses. This can include funeral and burial costs, loss of future income, medical bills incurred prior to the victim’s death, and pain and suffering. In some cases, compensation may also cover the loss of companionship and support that the victim provided.
