High-Speed Chase Ends in Crash in Livingston County
A high-speed chase ended in a crash in Livingston County after a driver, who was traveling at over 100 miles per hour, lost control of his vehicle while attempting to evade law enforcement. The incident, which took place on Interstate 96, involved a stolen Kia Forte and resulted in serious injuries for both the driver and his passenger.
Chase Begins After Deputies Spot Stolen Vehicle
Livingston County Sheriff’s deputies first encountered the Kia Forte on Interstate 96 and quickly discovered that the vehicle had been reported stolen on Monday. When deputies attempted to stop the car, the driver refused to pull over. Instead, he abruptly re-entered the freeway and accelerated, ignoring the emergency lights and sirens behind him.
Lieutenant Chad Sell explained that while the suspect was not driving aggressively, his primary focus was on escaping law enforcement. “He wasn’t driving aggressively,” Sell stated. “He was more focused on trying to get away. So that’s why we continued the pursuit for as long as we did.”
As the driver attempted to evade capture, he used the shoulder of the highway to bypass slower-moving traffic. Deputies pursued until the suspect tried to take the Kensington Road exit at high speed, causing the vehicle to overturn.
Suspects Identified, Both Injured in Crash
The driver, a 35-year-old man from Williamston, was discovered to have outstanding warrants from the U.S. Marshals and multiple other jurisdictions. His passenger, a 40-year-old man from Macelona, was also found to have active warrants for his arrest.
After the crash, deputies quickly assessed the situation, ensuring that it was safe before rendering aid to both individuals. “Just as quick as the chase started, the chase ended,” Sell stated, emphasizing the swift response from law enforcement. Both suspects were transported to a local hospital, where they remain in stable but serious condition.
Compensation for Accident Victims
While no other vehicles were involved in the crash, high-speed chases pose significant risks to other drivers and pedestrians. If a third party had been injured or suffered property damage due to this reckless pursuit, they would have the right to seek compensation. Victims in such cases may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and vehicle repair costs.
