Man Fatally Struck on Detroit Freeway While Fleeing Police
DETROIT — A tragic incident unfolded Tuesday afternoon when a man was fatally struck on a Detroit freeway while attempting to evade officers, according to the Michigan State Police. The incident, which occurred at approximately 12:30 p.m., highlights the dangers of high-stakes situations on busy roadways.
The man, a 44-year-old Detroit resident, was struck in the southbound lanes of Michigan 39 (Southfield Freeway) near Joy Road.
According to troopers, officers were initially responding to an unrelated incident in the area when they were alerted by a passerby about a “suspicious male” nearby. As officers turned their patrol vehicle to approach the individual, he unexpectedly jumped over the freeway fence, landing on the west side of the southbound lanes.
Once on the freeway, the man tragically found himself in the path of oncoming traffic. He was first hit by a semi-truck in the center lane and subsequently struck by a Ford Edge. Emergency responders transported him to a nearby hospital, but despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries. Officials have not yet released his identity, and an autopsy is pending as part of the ongoing investigation.
