Missouri Motorist Collides with Michigan State Police Cruiser on I-94

Missouri Motorist Collides with Michigan State Police Cruiser on I-94 late Saturday night, yet fortunately, the trooper emerged without injury. The collision occurred just after 11:10 p.m. on Interstate 94 westbound, near mile marker 25 in Lincoln Township, as the trooper was conducting a routine traffic stop.

According to the Michigan State Police report, the trooper was standing beside his patrol cruiser when a westbound vehicle veered off course and struck the stationary police vehicle. The driver was identified as a 33-year-old resident of Missouri.

Initial investigations indicate he was under the influence of a controlled substance at the time of the crash. Following standard procedure, state police arrested the driver on the scene. They transported him to the Berrien County Jail to face charges related to operating under the influence and reckless driving.

A second Michigan State Police officer, en route to assist with the traffic detail, witnessed the impact and immediately secured the scene to ensure no further harm would come to the trooper or passing motorists. State police officials stressed the potentially catastrophic nature of such incidents, emphasizing that “this could have been a devastating tragedy for everyone involved, including the trooper.”

They also reiterated the dangers of impaired driving and urged motorists to make responsible choices. “If you plan to indulge, do so responsibly. Please don’t put the rest of us in danger. Stay safe, be kind, and count your blessings,” the department reminded the public.

This crash marks the second time in a week that a Michigan State Police patrol vehicle was struck while providing traffic assistance in the MSP Fifth District. On May 30, a similar collision occurred along I-94 near mile marker 87, underscoring the ongoing hazard faced by officers working the roadside.

Compensation at Stake and How We Can Help

When law enforcement officers and civilians are injured or their property is damaged in collisions like this, multiple forms of compensation may be available. Victims can seek recovery for medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages, and property damage.

In cases involving state vehicles, injured officers or bystanders might also qualify for workers’ compensation or special state-funded benefits. Emotional distress and PTSD claims can arise if the traumatic event leads to long-term psychological harm.
