Northern Michigan Man Critically Injured in Dirt Bike Crash

A Northern Michigan man was critically injured after being struck by a dirt bike while walking near his home in Presque Isle County. The accident occurred around 7 p.m. on County Road 451, with Michigan State Police (MSP) troopers from the Alpena post witnessing the tragic incident.

Details of the Accident

The victim, an 87-year-old Rogers City resident, was crossing the county road with a flashlight to retrieve his mail when the crash occurred. At the time, sunset had already occurred at approximately 6:20 p.m., making visibility lower.

As the man reached his mailbox on the east shoulder of the road, a juvenile riding a dirt bike without a headlight was traveling northbound. The dirt bike struck the elderly pedestrian, causing severe injuries.

Emergency responders, including MSP troopers from Alpena and Gaylord posts, the Presque Isle County Sheriff’s Office, Rogers City Police Department, Rogers City Ambulance, and Rogers City Area First Responders, quickly arrived at the scene. The critically injured man was immediately airlifted to a hospital in northern Lower Michigan, where he remained in critical condition as of Monday.

The juvenile dirt bike rider was not injured in the crash. Authorities have not yet disclosed whether charges will be filed, but investigations are ongoing to determine liability and potential legal consequences.

Compensation Available to Victims of Pedestrian Accidents

Victims and their families may be entitled to compensation for their losses in cases like this. Depending on the circumstances, compensation may cover:

  • Medical expenses – Hospital bills, surgeries, rehabilitation, and ongoing medical care.
  • Lost wages – If the victim was employed, compensation can account for missed work and reduced earning capacity.
  • Pain and suffering – This includes emotional distress, trauma, and reduced quality of life.
  • Wrongful death damages – If the worst happens, families may seek compensation for funeral expenses and loss of companionship.

Pedestrian accidents involving negligent dirt bike riders can be devastating, especially when riders fail to use proper safety equipment, such as headlights, in low-light conditions.
