Pedestrian Killed in Multi-Vehicle Crash on Southfield Freeway

A pedestrian killed in a multi-vehicle crash Monday night on Southfield Freeway has prompted an ongoing investigation by the Michigan State Police. The tragic incident occurred around 11:15 p.m. and was first reported through multiple emergency calls to the Detroit Regional Communication Center.

Initial callers reported a man walking along the southbound Southfield Service Drive near Nine Mile Road. Moments later, additional witnesses said the individual had moved into the center lane of the freeway and was seen lying in the roadway. Responding officers from both Michigan State Police and Southfield Police Department arrived quickly at the scene and discovered the man, who was sadly pronounced dead on-site.

Investigators believe the man was initially struck by one driver who pulled over and remained at the scene. Unfortunately, several other vehicles subsequently hit the pedestrian, but those drivers failed to stop. The victim carried no identification, and attempts to identify him using fingerprint technology have so far been unsuccessful. Authorities continue to work diligently to determine who the man was and to notify any next of kin.

“We want to remind everyone never to walk along or cross the freeway,” said First Lieutenant Mike Shaw of the Michigan State Police. “If your vehicle becomes disabled, or if you’re in a crash, stay inside your vehicle with your seatbelt fastened until help arrives. Walking on the freeway can quickly turn fatal.”

Due to the severity of the incident, the Southfield Freeway was temporarily shut down between M-10/John C. Lodge Freeway and Eight Mile Road/Exit 15 for several hours overnight, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.

Compensation at Stake for the Victim’s Family

In cases like this, where a pedestrian is killed in a multi-vehicle crash, the victim’s family may be entitled to various forms of compensation. This can include funeral and burial expenses, pain and suffering, emotional distress, loss of companionship, and even potential lost income if the deceased was a primary provider. Identifying liable parties—especially in hit-and-run scenarios—can be complex, but compensation can still be pursued through uninsured motorist coverage or wrongful death claims.
