Pregnant woman hurt in Bloomfield crash; baby dies
A 23-week-pregnant passenger in a white Honda Accord suffered life-threatening injuries and, following an emergency delivery, her premature infant passed away the next day after a two-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon in Bloomfield Township.
According to the Bloomfield Township Police Department’s preliminary investigation, the accident occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m. near the IHOP on South Telegraph Road. The Accord, traveling eastbound from a median turnaround, was struck broadside by a black Jeep Grand Cherokee proceeding northbound. Witnesses report that the Jeep’s driver failed to stop at the red signal governing the median crossing, plowing into the side of the smaller sedan.
Three occupants were in the Accord at the time. The critically injured pregnant passenger was extricated by first responders, and medical personnel performed an emergency C-section at the scene. Tragically, her newborn succumbed to complications on Sunday, less than 24 hours after the collision. A young child secured in a car seat also suffered minor injuries and was treated and released from a local hospital. Both drivers were transported for treatment of their injuries, which were reported as non-life-threatening.
The South Oakland County Crash Investigation Team has joined local officers to piece together the precise sequence of events that led to this devastating outcome. Bloomfield Township police urge anyone who witnessed the crash or who may have dash-cam footage to contact their department at 248-433-7755.
This collision has left families grappling with profound emotional and financial burdens. For the injured mother, the physical trauma of sudden C-section and recovery is compounded by immeasurable grief. The surviving child and the other driver face ongoing medical appointments and rehabilitation. Beyond hospital bills, victims may encounter lost wages, counseling costs, and the long road to psychological recovery after witnessing such a traumatic event.
