State Police ID Driver in Fatal Ypsilanti Hit-and-Run
State Police ID Driver in Fatal Ypsilanti Hit-and-Run when investigators confirmed this week that the motorist involved in the May 26 collision was a 20-year-old man from Jackson. The Michigan State Police Brighton Post reports the crash occurred at approximately 2:15 a.m. on westbound I-94, just east of the US-12 bypass, where troopers and Huron Valley Ambulance first found the victim lying in the roadway.
According to MSP, witnesses called to report a man walking unclothed in the travel lanes. Moments later, a black 2018 Chevy Malibu struck the pedestrian and sped away. Despite swift lifesaving efforts by paramedics, the 52-year-old Warren resident was pronounced dead at the scene. The bleak aftermath left the community reeling and authorities scrambling for leads.
On Monday, detectives received an anonymous tip suggesting the driver was known to the caller. During a subsequent interview, the suspect admitted he had been drinking and realized too late that he had hit someone. Citing his underage status and impaired condition, he fled the scene rather than render aid. Troopers impounded his damaged vehicle for forensic review and will forward charging recommendations to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office.
Hit-and-run collisions carry severe legal consequences, both criminally and civilly. Victims’ families may pursue wrongful-death claims seeking compensation for funeral and burial costs, lost household income, and the emotional anguish caused by such a sudden loss. In Michigan, courts also recognize “loss of society” damages for surviving spouses and dependents who suffer the deprivation of companionship and support.
