Taylor Man Charged in Hit-and-Run That Injured Pedestrian
A Taylor man charged in a hit-and-run is now facing multiple criminal counts after allegedly striking a woman and her dog before fleeing the scene, officials reported. The incident, which took place on February 3, resulted in severe injuries to the pedestrian and the tragic death of her dog.
Charges and Circumstances of the Hit-and-Run
Norman Edgar Newman, 38, has been formally charged with animal cruelty resulting in death, reckless driving, and driving with a suspended or revoked license in connection with the crash. According to prosecutors, Newman was driving a white Ford Explorer northbound on Holland Road near Goddard Road at approximately 5:40 p.m. when he lost control, veered into the southbound lane, and struck a 34-year-old woman and her dog. Instead of stopping to assist, Newman fled the scene.
Despite his attempt to escape responsibility, Taylor police launched an investigation and were able to track down Newman using video surveillance footage. The footage identified both the vehicle and the driver, leading to Newman’s arrest on February 7. He was arraigned two days later, receiving a $1,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on February 24 for a pre-trial conference.
Legal Consequences and Potential Compensation for Victims
Victims of hit-and-run accidents often face significant physical, emotional, and financial burdens. In this case, the injured woman may be entitled to compensation for medical bills, rehabilitation costs, lost wages, and pain and suffering. Additionally, since her dog was killed in the incident, she may also be able to pursue compensation for emotional distress and veterinary expenses.
Under Michigan law, victims of reckless driving accidents may seek damages through a personal injury claim. If the at-fault driver is uninsured or underinsured, the victim can file a claim under their own uninsured motorist coverage. However, dealing with insurance companies and legal proceedings can be overwhelming, which is why having an experienced legal team is crucial.
