Teen Injured, Officer Struck by Fleeing Vehicle in Detroit

DETROIT — An alarming incident unfolded Tuesday night on Detroit’s west side, leaving a police officer injured and a teenager in critical condition. According to Assistant Police Chief Charles Fitzgerald, the chaotic events began near the intersection of Seven Mile and Greenfield during a routine patrol.

Officers in the area observed a suspicious vehicle backed into a driveway, blocking the sidewalk. As they approached, they noticed two individuals inside the car, appearing to hide items under the seats. When the officers requested the occupants exit the vehicle, the driver refused, escalating the situation.

Instead of complying, the driver reversed the car, ramming a scout car multiple times before striking and dragging one of the officers. The vehicle then sped away, prompting the officers to react. Out of concern for their safety and that of bystanders, the officers discharged their weapons. The 18-year-old passenger was hit four times in the arm and chest.

The injured teen was later discovered a few blocks away along with the abandoned vehicle. Emergency services transported him to a nearby hospital, where he remains in critical condition. Meanwhile, the officer who was dragged during the altercation received medical treatment and is expected to recover. Authorities believe the driver, a 17-year-old male, fled the scene on foot.

Gang Ties and Ongoing Investigation

According to law enforcement, the two teens involved in the incident are suspected to be affiliated with a local gang. The investigation remains ongoing as police actively search for the driver. This incident highlights the challenges officers face when dealing with potentially dangerous suspects during routine patrols.

Compensation for the Injured: What’s at Stake

Incidents like this often leave victims with significant physical, emotional, and financial challenges. The injured officer may have claims for workers’ compensation to cover medical expenses, rehabilitation, and potential lost wages due to time off duty. In addition, the 18-year-old passenger, despite being involved in the incident, may also be eligible for certain compensations depending on the circumstances, such as medical expenses related to the injuries sustained. Determining liability and accessing fair compensation requires careful legal examination of the case’s facts.
