Truck Hits Gravel Hauler on I-94 Near M-39, One Dead

Truck Hits Gravel Hauler on I-94 Near M-39. A pickup collided with a stationary haul truck just after midnight, resulting in the death of a 64-year-old Dearborn Heights man, according to Michigan State Police. The westbound lanes of Interstate 94 near the M-39 (Southfield Freeway) interchange were shut down at approximately 12:24 a.m. on Friday. At the same time, crews conducted a thorough investigation into the crash and cleared debris from the roadway. The northbound M-39 ramp to westbound I-94 also remained closed on Friday morning.

Preliminary reports indicate the gravel hauler had pulled onto the right shoulder due to mechanical issues and headlights had been activated to warn approaching traffic. Witness statements relayed to troopers suggest the pickup veered onto the shoulder and struck the parked truck. “At this time, we do not know why the pickup left the travel lanes,” said First Lieutenant Mike Shaw of the Michigan State Police. “Medical examiner findings, combined with skid-mark analysis and vehicle inspections, should shed more light on the circumstances.”

Emergency responders arrived within minutes but were unable to save the pickup driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported, and the driver of the gravel hauler was not on board at the time of impact. The investigation remains active, and troopers are urging anyone with video surveillance or additional information to come forward to assist in determining the exact cause of the collision.

When tragic events like this occur, families often face not only emotional turmoil but also mounting financial burdens. Wrongful death and personal injury claims can provide compensation for medical expenses, funeral and burial costs, loss of income, and the pain and suffering endured by surviving relatives. In cases where negligence—whether from vehicle maintenance failures, roadway hazards, or driver impairment—is established, damages may also include loss of consortium and punitive awards designed to deter similar conduct in the future.
