Two Injured in Troy After 3-Car Collision Linked to Drunk Driving

TROY, MI — Two people were injured in a three-car collision in Troy involving a suspected drunken driver last Thursday, Nov. 7, according to local authorities. The crash occurred at approximately 7:10 p.m. near the intersection of John R and Big Beaver roads, drawing emergency response teams to the scene.

While specific details remain limited, police reported that two of the drivers involved told officers they had sustained minor injuries from the impact. During the investigation, officers approached the third driver, a 62-year-old Sterling Heights resident, who exhibited noticeable signs of intoxication. According to authorities, the man slurred his speech, had a strong odor of alcohol, and subsequently failed several field sobriety tests.

A preliminary breath test showed the driver had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .22 percent—nearly triple Michigan’s legal limit of .08 percent. Later, more comprehensive tests conducted at the Troy Jail indicated even higher levels, with results showing BAC readings of .26 and .27 percent. The Sterling Heights man was taken into custody and has been charged with operating a vehicle with a BAC of .17 percent or more, along with failing to maintain an assured clear distance, a critical factor in rear-end collisions.

Types of Compensation Available to the Victims

Victims of drunk driving accidents like this one may be eligible for various types of compensation, including medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering. Even in cases of “minor injuries,” medical bills for emergency care, follow-up treatment, and physical therapy can quickly add up.

Furthermore, victims may face additional losses, including time off work and expenses related to vehicle repair or replacement. Compensation for emotional trauma, often termed “pain and suffering,” may also be available to victims who experience lasting distress as a result of the crash. Given the drunk driver’s significant level of intoxication in this case, punitive damages may also be pursued to hold the at-fault party accountable and deter similar behavior in the future.
