Warren Crash Kills Two Friends, Injures Two Officers

A devastating accident in Warren, Michigan, early Monday morning claimed the lives of two lifelong best friends and left two police officers critically injured. The Warren crash kills two friends, Cedric Hayden and DeJuan Pettis, while also resulting in severe injuries to the officers involved, raising many questions about what led to the tragic collision.

The crash occurred at approximately 5 a.m. on Monday, September 30, 2024, near Schoenherr Road, just south of Toepfer Road and north of 8 Mile Road. Authorities confirmed that two Warren police officers were in a marked patrol SUV when it collided with a white Dodge Durango, which was carrying Hayden and Pettis. According to investigators, the front of the police SUV made impact with the Durango, causing the vehicle to overturn and land on its side off the road.

Cedric Hayden was pronounced dead at the scene, while DeJuan Pettis was transported to a nearby hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. Both men were beloved members of the community, and family members are grappling with the sudden and tragic loss of their loved ones. The lifelong friendship between Hayden and Pettis was well-known in the area, making this incident even more heartbreaking for those who knew them.

The two officers involved in the accident were also critically injured. One officer required extrication from the wreckage by Warren firefighters and underwent surgery Monday afternoon. The second officer, who is also in critical condition, is undergoing further medical evaluations. Officials stated that both officers suffered multiple broken bones, highlighting the severity of the crash.

While the cause of the accident remains under investigation, Warren Police Commissioner Bill Gajewski has confirmed that the officers were not engaged in a vehicle pursuit at the time of the crash. “This was not a vehicle pursuit,” Gajewski said, but he refrained from commenting on whether the officers had their lights or sirens activated when the crash occurred. “It’s still too early, and with the officers in surgery, we haven’t been able to speak with them yet,” Gajewski added.

Compensation at Stake for the Victims’ Families
