Warren resident fatally struck on Interstate 94 in Ypsilanti Township
Warren resident fatally struck on Interstate 94 in Ypsilanti Township early Sunday morning, Michigan State Police reported, after a hit-and-run collision claimed his life and left loved ones searching for answers. The victim, a 52-year-old man from Warren, was walking unclothed in the westbound lanes of I-94 near the US-12 bypass around 2:25 a.m. when he was struck by a passing black sedan that failed to stop.
First on the scene, a Huron Valley Ambulance crew attempted to render aid, followed by state troopers and personnel from the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office and Ypsilanti Fire Department. Despite valiant life-saving efforts, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The circumstances surrounding his presence on the highway remain under investigation, and troopers are urging anyone with information to contact the MSP Brighton Post at 810-227-105. Reports indicate the striking vehicle may have sustained damage to its passenger side.
Hit-and-run crashes are particularly devastating, compounding the emotional trauma of losing a loved one with the frustration of a suspect fleeing responsibility. When a driver fails to remain at the scene, families must grapple with unanswered questions and additional legal hurdles. In Michigan, however, statutes allow surviving family members to pursue compensation through wrongful death claims, uninsured motorist coverage, or other avenues, even when the at-fault party cannot be immediately located.
Compensation at stake in wrongful death actions can include:
-
Funeral and burial expenses, to cover the costs of memorial services and interment.
-
Loss of financial support, for income the deceased would have provided to dependents.
-
Loss of companionship and consortium, acknowledging the emotional impact on spouses and children.
-
Pain and suffering, for the decedent’s pre-death distress.
