Washtenaw Wrong-Way Crash Kills Michigan Man
Washtenaw Wrong-Way Crash Kills Michigan Man when a 25-year-old Whitmore Lake resident tragically lost his life after driving his 2009 Acura westbound into oncoming traffic on M-14, colliding head-on with a semi-tractor trailer just before 11 p.m. Monday, according to the Michigan State Police Brighton Post.
Troopers report that the Acura, traveling in the eastbound lanes near Vorhies Road in Superior Township, struck an eastbound Freightliner driven by a 25-year-old man from Ontario. Emergency crews arrived on scene to find the Acura’s driver unresponsive; he was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck operator sustained only minor injuries and was treated locally before being released.
Investigators believe impairment played a role in the collision. “Preliminary evidence suggests alcohol and drug use were contributing factors,” Michigan State Police officials noted. The MSP Brighton Post is urging anyone with information to contact them at 810-227-1051 to assist with the ongoing investigation.
Understanding the Compensation at Stake
When a loved one is killed due to another party’s negligence or impairment, families face not only emotional devastation but also financial burdens. In Michigan, wrongful-death survivors may pursue compensation for:
-
Funeral and burial costs: Funeral expenses can quickly mount, and the law allows families to recover these out-of-pocket fees.
-
Loss of financial support: If the decedent contributed to household income, survivors can claim the value of that support for the remainder of what would have been their life expectancy.
-
Loss of companionship and guidance: Michigan law recognizes the intangible losses of love, care, and guidance that families endure after a wrongful death.
-
Pain and suffering: Although pain and suffering claims typically apply to injured plaintiffs, certain punitive measures may apply when gross negligence—such as driving under the influence—is proven.
-
Medical expenses prior to death: Any emergency care costs incurred between the crash and pronouncement of death are recoverable.
