Waterford Man Killed in Oakland County Pedestrian Crash
A Waterford man was killed in an Oakland County pedestrian crash late Saturday night, prompting an ongoing investigation by local authorities. The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. near the intersection of Cooley Lake Road and Hiller Road in Waterford Township, according to a report from the Waterford Police Department. Emergency response was swift, with assistance provided by the Waterford Regional Fire Department.
The victim, a 69-year-old resident of Waterford, was reportedly attempting to cross Cooley Lake Road from the south side when he failed to yield the right of way to oncoming traffic. At the same time, an 81-year-old man from White Lake Township was driving a 2001 Ford Econoline van westbound on Cooley Lake Road when he struck the pedestrian.
The injured man was transported to McLaren Oakland Hospital for emergency treatment, but sadly succumbed to his injuries. According to the official police report, there is no indication that drugs or alcohol were involved on the part of the driver.
Authorities continue to investigate the tragic incident and are asking anyone with additional information to contact Officer Miller at 248-618-6062. The goal is to piece together a clearer picture of what led to the crash and ensure accountability where necessary.
Legal Rights and Compensation for Victims’ Families
In the aftermath of a fatal pedestrian accident, surviving family members are often left with more than just emotional pain—they may also face significant financial burdens. These can include medical bills, funeral expenses, and loss of financial support, particularly when the deceased was a primary breadwinner or contributing member of the household.
Under Michigan law, families may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim to recover compensation for such losses. This may include damages for pain and suffering, loss of companionship, and loss of future income. Even when the pedestrian is found partially at fault for the accident, compensation may still be available under the state’s comparative negligence laws.
