West Michigan Student Killed in Crash Near High School

A West Michigan student killed in a crash Wednesday has left the Custer community in mourning after a devastating two-vehicle accident near Mason County Eastern High School. The tragic incident claimed the life of a 16-year-old student and left another student injured.

The crash occurred just before noon at the U.S. 10 and Custer Road intersection in front of the high school. Emergency responders, including a school resource deputy from Mason County Eastern High School, rushed to the scene.

The deputy immediately recognized one of the students involved and found the young driver trapped in the vehicle. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by the deputy and a firefighter from the Free Soil/Meade Fire Department, the student was later pronounced dead at Corewell Health Hospital in Ludington.

Community in Shock and Mourning

The local school district quickly issued a statement expressing its condolences and offering support to students and staff.

“We have counselors at the school to meet with students and staff,” the school district shared on social media. “Please keep the families in your thoughts and prayers.”

Mason County Sheriff Kim C. Cole also expressed his grief, acknowledging the deep impact the loss has had on the community.

“As a father of young drivers, my heart breaks for the family of the young life lost. And, as the sheriff, I join our community in mourning for the MCE family,” he said in a press release.

Emergency response teams, including Custer Township Fire & Jaws, Scottville Fire, LIFE EMS, the Mason County Sheriff’s Office Victim’s Services Unit, and the Mason County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Crash Reconstruction Team, all participated in the response efforts.

Seeking Justice and Compensation for the Victim’s Family

In tragic cases like this, grieving families not only endure emotional pain but also face significant financial burdens, including medical expenses, funeral costs, and potential loss of financial support. If negligence was involved—whether due to reckless driving, distracted driving, or another party’s fault—the victim’s family may be eligible for compensation through a wrongful death claim. Such claims can provide financial relief to cover medical bills, funeral expenses, emotional suffering, and lost future earnings.
