Woman Dies, Five Injured in New Year’s I-96 Crash

On New Year’s Day, a tragic accident on westbound I-96 in Lyon Township, Michigan, resulted in the death of a 57-year-old woman from Fenton and left five others seriously injured. The incident occurred around 3:09 a.m., east of the South Hill Road overpass.

According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, the collision involved three vehicles. A 2016 Ford Explorer, driven by a 51-year-old man from Fenton, rear-ended a 2025 Chevrolet Trax that was stopped in the second lane with its hazard lights on. The Trax, operated by a 30-year-old man from Ypsilanti, was stationary for reasons that remain under investigation. Following the initial impact, the Explorer veered into the eastbound lanes and was struck head-on by a 2018 Jeep Compass driven by a 75-year-old woman from Leslie.

The occupants of the Ford Explorer were removed before the vehicle caught fire after the second collision. The driver and his wife, both wearing seat belts, sustained serious injuries. The 57-year-old woman from Fenton was pronounced dead at the scene; her seat belt usage is unknown. Her 82-year-old husband, also a backseat passenger, was transported to the hospital in critical condition; seat belt usage is unknown. The driver of the Jeep Compass, wearing a seat belt, was hospitalized in critical condition. The driver of the Chevrolet Trax, also wearing a seat belt, was listed in stable condition. Alcohol may have been a factor in the crash; a blood draw was completed for the driver, and results are pending.
