MSP Investigates Fatal I-94 Crash in Wayne County
MSP Investigates Fatal I-94 Crash in Wayne County after a two-vehicle collision forced the closure of westbound Interstate 94 for several hours Tuesday evening. Michigan State Police were called to the scene just before 6:40 p.m. near the city of Wayne, where an out-of-control pickup truck veered off an exit ramp, crossed multiple lanes, and struck a blue pickup traveling in the adjacent lane.
According to MSP’s preliminary findings, the first pickup lost control on the ramp, crossing over pavement markings before colliding head-on with the second pickup. Both vehicles then rolled over, scattering debris across the roadway and prompting an immediate shut-down of the highway. Emergency crews arrived swiftly, securing the scene and attending to the injured.
In the rollover, the driver of the ramp pickup was not wearing a seat belt and was partially ejected from the vehicle, sustaining critical injuries. Four occupants of the blue pickup were treated on site and transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.
The severity of the initial impact and the resultant rollovers underscore the danger of high-speed lane deviations and the crucial role of restraint systems. “A seatbelt will not only keep you behind the wheel, it will keep you inside of the vehicle,” MSP 1st Lt. Mike Shaw emphasized in a social media update. “We are seeing too many drivers not wearing their seatbelts. Wear your seatbelt—it will save your life.”
Traffic on westbound I-94 remained at a standstill as crews worked to clear wreckage and conduct a scene investigation. The Michigan Department of Transportation finally reopened all lanes just before midnight, restoring normal travel conditions for motorists.
The crash remains under active investigation by MSP’s traffic crash reconstruction unit, which is gathering witness statements, reviewing vehicle telemetry, and analyzing skid‐mark evidence to determine the exact sequence of events that led to the deadly impact. Law enforcement officials caution drivers to remain vigilant when approaching exit ramps and to always maintain proper control when reducing speed.
