One Dead One Rescued After Car Plunges into Grand River

One Dead, One Rescued After Car Plunges into Grand River early Sunday morning in Eaton County, leaving authorities searching for answers. The Eaton County Sheriff’s Office received reports of the crash around 2:22 a.m. through an iPhone Crash Notification and an alert from the BMW Response Center.

Deputies responding to the scene discovered a severely damaged guardrail near the dead end of Jolly Highway. The vehicle’s coordinates placed it in the middle of the Grand River, prompting an urgent rescue effort. Upon arrival, Michigan State Police and Eaton County deputies spotted taillights submerged approximately 200 feet from the shoreline.

Rescue Efforts and Tragic Discovery

Acting quickly, troopers located a canoe on a neighboring property and used it to paddle out to the submerged vehicle. During the search, deputies spotted a man struggling to swim to shore. They managed to rescue him and transport him to a nearby hospital for treatment.

However, a second occupant remained missing. Authorities launched an extensive search, utilizing boats, drones with thermal imaging, and search parties to scan the river and surrounding areas. After several hours, at approximately 8:30 a.m., the Tri-County Dive Team located the missing passenger—a 39-year-old man—about 10 feet underwater, a short distance downstream. Tragically, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators believe alcohol may have played a role in the crash, though a full investigation remains ongoing.

Compensation Options for Victims and Their Families

Victims of serious car accidents, especially those involving potential negligence, may be entitled to compensation for their injuries, medical expenses, and emotional distress. In fatal accidents, surviving family members can pursue wrongful death claims to cover funeral costs, loss of income, and the pain and suffering caused by their loved one’s death.

In this case, if the crash was caused by driver negligence, the injured survivor may have grounds for a personal injury lawsuit to seek damages for medical bills, lost wages, and long-term rehabilitation. Additionally, the family of the deceased victim could pursue a wrongful death claim if negligence is proven, ensuring they receive financial support during this difficult time.
