SUV Hits 8-Year-Old on I-94 Amid Domestic Conflict
An ongoing investigation is underway after a troubling incident on Interstate 94 in Metro Detroit, where an SUV hit an 8-year-old girl during what police have identified as a domestic altercation.
Michigan State Police reported that the event unfolded around 9 p.m. Monday on westbound I-94 near Vining Road (Exit 197) in Wayne County. Multiple 911 calls alerted authorities to what witnesses described as a violent dispute inside a brown Ford SUV. Initial reports indicated a fight was taking place in the moving vehicle, followed by sightings of a man walking along the highway after the SUV exited the freeway.
When the troopers arrived, they located a 51-year-old man from Dearborn walking near the road. He had sustained a serious eye injury and was quickly transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Investigators soon determined that the injured man and a 36-year-old man, also from Dearborn, had gotten into an argument that escalated into a physical fight inside the vehicle.
According to the police report, as the vehicle pulled over to the shoulder, the situation worsened. The suspect attempted to exit the SUV, and during the chaos, an 8-year-old girl who was also inside the vehicle tried to get out. Tragically, she fell from the SUV and her arm was run over as the suspect re-entered the vehicle and drove off—with the injured child still inside.
Later, officers were notified that both the suspect and the child had arrived at a local hospital seeking medical care. The girl was eventually transferred into the custody of another adult and is now receiving treatment at Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit. The suspect was taken into custody without further incident.
“Troopers are continuing their investigation into this assault and will submit a report to the prosecutor for review,” said MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw.
Understanding the Compensation at Stake
Incidents like these can result in significant physical, emotional, and financial burdens for victims, especially children. In cases involving reckless or negligent actions during domestic conflicts, victims and their families may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering, emotional trauma, and potential long-term care. The fact that the child was injured during an active assault inside a moving vehicle opens the door for both personal injury and emotional distress claims.
